It’s playoff time in the NBA and NHL. From the series-winning 3-point shot from Portland Trail Blazers’ Damian Lilliard to the Game 7 comeback from the San Jose Sharks, the playoffs have been packed with memorable #MyFanMoments.
As the exhilarating seasons come to a close in both leagues, we're looking back on some of the coolest projects our sports partners ran this season. Here are the top highlights from our partners in the NHL and NBA playoffs:
Toronto Maple Leafs - St. Patrick’s "Truth or Tale" Campaign
Before they became The Maple Leafs, Toronto was actually named the St. Patrick’s. To celebrate their heritage and the Irish holiday, the team wore their retro green and white jerseys for two games this season.
In coordination with these games, the team created a St. Patrick's themed quiz campaign entitled “Truth or Tale”. The campaign was cross-platform, incorporating YouTube videos and the team's custom app. To build hype, it ran in multi-part segments over the weeks leading up to the games. The team invited fans to test their team history knowledge, and further motivated fans with the chance to win free tickets to the games.
Columbus Blue Jackets - User Generated Content Jumbotron Display
Beyond assisting The Columbus Blue Jackets in creating great sponsored contests, we also helped them find ways to engage their fans in-stadium. To encourage game participation, we launched a user-generated content social display ("Stream") which showcased fans’ posts about the team. This omnichannel activation allowed fans to see their posts on the big screen in real-time, encouraging sharing and creating a unique and memorable experience.
Pittsburgh Penguins: "Renovate the Rink" Campaign
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Commercial Construction set out in Fall 2018 to make a difference in the lives of hockey lovers by offering a $100,000 prize to renovate a local rink. Using a Tradable Bits video contest, fans nominated their rink and explained how this renovation could help their community. The contest earned an impressive amount of public support and organic reach, thanks to local Pittsburgh news and radio stations sharing the campaign. From hundreds of nominations, one lucky finalist received a $100,000 prize and the campaign was a phenomenal success for the local community and the organization.
Fun Fact: The "Renovate the Rink" campaign is the current leader for most entries in any sports campaign on Tradable Bits!
St. Louis Blues - NHL All-Star Campaign
For the first time since 1988, St. Louis will be hosting the NHL All-Star game in January 2020. The organization was looking for creative ways to spread awareness and build buzz around the event. By using a Tradable Bits Quiz campaign, they created a knowledge-testing challenge which informed fans about the event and built excitement with plenty of time in advance.
Portland Trail Blazers - “Get Well Soon” Campaign and AR Activation
When Portland Trail Blazers’ center Jusuf Nurkić sustained a serious injury just before the playoffs, fans were devastated and wanted to let Jusuf know that he’ll be missed. To facilitate this, the Trail Blazers launched a campaign where fans could submit a written message or video directly to Jusuf. The “Get Well Soon” initiative offered a unique opportunity for fans to connect directly with their idol Jusuf and become more engaged with the team.
Bonus: One of our most exciting activations with the Portland Trail Blazers to date is the Augmented Reality filter for Facebook camera. The filter overlays facepaint and the mascot's head over top of fans' faces in real time. The familiar Snapchat-like medium is a fun way for fans to express their #Ripcity pride and support for the team.
Toronto Raptors - Sponsorship Contests
The Toronto Raptors run many exciting campaigns throughout the season, often involving sponsors to offer big prizes and attract many fans. A key example was their collaboration with Pizza Pizza, where fans could receive a free slice of pizza just by entering the campaign (if The Raptors won the night before).
The Toronto Raptors also helped us create new ways to engage fans. For example, we collaborated on a mobile friendly “Scratch and Win” contest operated through Instagram Stories, which engaged fans and connected them with sponsors.
