Activists Get Active in The Great "Virtual" Climate Race for Solar Energy Projects

The Great Climate Race Virtual Marathon

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, VANCOUVER, In the lead up to the international climate negotiations in Paris in December, Vancouver based climate campaigner Ben West has co-founded a new running event series focused on crowdfunding for climate solutions. The inaugural event, 10km and 2.5km timed races are in Stanley Park on Sunday, November 8th. In response to interest from runners wanting to take action for the climate in various global locations, The Great Climate Race is now launching a “virtual race” with local sponsor Tradable Bits, which allows people to participate in the event from wherever they are in the week leading up to inaugural event in Vancouver.

“When we launched our event earlier this year we started getting questions from people in other cities in Canada and around the world wondering when we would be doing a Great Climate Race in their city or how they could support our inaugural event from where they were,” said West. “We are planning on doing events in various locations in the years to come but we decided that a virtual race was a great way to include people worldwide and this push to speed up climate solutions”.

A page on The Great Climate Race website now provides instructions for potential race participants. After participants register they can run or walk wherever they like and on any terrain - trails, streets, sidewalks, mountains, coastlines, anywhere they can find a 10k or 2.5k distance. Participants are encouraged to track and share their experience using running apps like Strava, Garmin, Nike Running or RunKeepers and share posts from these apps on social media with the hashtag "#GreatClimateRace" or directly to the Great Climate Race website.

International participants will be incorporated into the race experience online and at the main event in Vancouver with the help of Vancouver-based digital marketing technology company Tradable Bits, a sponsor of The Great Climate Race. Tradable Bits is providing tools that help race organizers spread the word and engage participants about the event online. On race day they will provide a real time Stream of global social media posts from participants on The Great Climate Race website and on large displays at the Vancouver event.

“We’re thrilled that our social aggregation tools can help The Great Climate Race acknowledge the contributions of international supporters by showcasing their enthusiastic posts. This is an exciting opportunity to unite people around the world to do something meaningful for the health of the planet and their own health as well”, said Emily Taylor, Digital Marketing Specialist at Tradable Bits.

A portion of all funds raised from race registration fees in Vancouver and internationally will go towards a solar energy project in support of the Stanley Park Ecology Society. The high-profile project will provide learning opportunities for thousands of young people and other residents in Vancouver. Participants are encouraged to nominate projects in any location to potentially benefit from funds raised by race participants through peer-to-peer fundraising on The Great Climate Race website or through pledges made offline.

“Our goal is for the Great Climate Race to be a tool to help people crowdfund for local climate solutions. We want to empower people to be part of the solution and if we convince people to get a bit more fit in the process that’s great too. We very much appreciate the support from Tradable Bits who have helped guide us to make this all possible”
